September 2024

The members of Public Safety enjoyed welcoming our amazing students back to campus during the month of August. We participated in a number of informational sessions including Orientation assistant training, meeting with all first-year students, tabling events, residential advisor training, lunch sessions with junior fellows, a Greek life presentation, hosting Narcan training for faculty and staff, and even getting into a dunk tank. We thank our campus partners for creating so many great opportunities for us to engage with students.

I am also pleased to share that Public Safety is now engaged in the Shattering the Red Zone campaign. This national campaign is dedicated to raising awareness and shattering the silence about college sexual violence, specifically by bringing attention to the period during the fall semester, when sexual assault is most prevalent. Public Safety will partner with campus offices to highlight this important campaign.

Clery Act

As an institution of higher education, Bucknell must comply with the federal Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to make crime and fire safety information available to the campus community each year by October 1. A separate email will go out to the campus community later this month announcing the release of the 2024 report. To learn more about the Clery Act, please visit our website

Next month we will share more information about the Clery Act during Clery Compliance Week, which takes place Oct. 7-11.

Traffic and Parking

We remind all students and employees to register their vehicles. We understand for new employees there can be a weeklong delay in information getting uploaded into the appropriate HR systems. That delay will affect your ability to register your vehicle. Your license plate acts as your permit. We check our most densely populated lots throughout the day. Violators will be ticketed, so we encourage everyone to follow the parking rules.

Electric scooters are a great way to get around campus and are popular with students. We remind students that Pennsylvania prohibits the operation of electric scooters on public roadways or sidewalks. Bucknell allows their use on university-owned property. Scooter users are reminded that they must stop at all stop signs and to please be courteous to pedestrians. The statistics below are accurate as of September 5th, 2024.

Since July 9th, 2024, the following represents our traffic stop statistics related to stop sign enforcement:

Total traffic stops 96

Traffic warnings 71

Total citations issued 25

Since August 1st we have issued 422 parking citations.

Camera System Pilot Program

As we continue to evaluate ways, we can enhance the safety and security of our campus, we are engaging in a pilot program with our camera system. We are selecting 10 of our campus cameras for threat detection technology. Those cameras will be enhanced with AI technology designed to alert Public Safety if a weapon is displayed. The areas we are selecting are not densely populated locations of campus. We are exploring this technology because in violent critical incidents, the suspect often displays a weapon for a couple of minutes before the shooting occurs. Early threat detection can lead to early intervention, which in turn can save lives.

During this pilot program, officers will display their weapons in those areas to check the system. As we get closer to the start date, we will advise the campus community via the Message Center about which areas we are using for testing. Questions about this program may be directed to publicsafety@bucknell.edu

Upcoming Events

We have four upcoming training sessions in September. Public Safety is partnering with the Dean of Students Office to provide Active Shooter training to the Class of 2028. In addition, medical staff from Evangelical Hospital will provide important information to this class. Additionally, Public Safety will sponsor three Narcan training opportunities, and all participants will be provided with Narcan at the conclusion of the training.

Reminder to Download the BSAFE APP

We have updated some of the content within the BSAFE app since the spring semester. You may need to sign out of the app to allow the content to update and then sign back in. We have also added seven new active shooter videos. We are working toward finalizing and updating the emergency preparedness content. If you have not downloaded the app, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible.

Fraud Awareness
As a reminder if you get an email or text asking you for money or asking for your account information to deposit money into your account, be cautious. There are a number of sophisticated scams in which you could get a text or email from a strange number or from someone pretending to be from the University. If you receive any suspicious emails or text messages, please feel free to contact us, or contact the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
