March Safety Tips
For our students:
The best way to prevent someone you don’t know from entering your assigned room is simple: lock your door. Whether you are inside your room or away at class, locking your door is an easy and effective way to prevent unauthorized entry. All of the situations we address involving illegal entry into rooms are the result of unlocked doors. We are not seeing incidents where doors are being forced open. As we all work to improve safety, please remember to lock your door.
It can also be tempting to leave your vehicle key in your unlocked car. This is not a good practice and creates an unnecessary risk.
BSAFE App
March is a great time to hop back into the BSAFE app and review the resources available. From Friend Walk and texting with Dispatch to anonymous reporting and short safety videos, the app is designed to help you stay prepared. We encourage you to take a few minutes to reacquaint yourself with its features.
Bucknell offers a number of supportive resources for the campus community. You are not alone. If you need assistance, we encourage you to learn about student well-being resources, review information in the BSAFE app, or call us directly so we can connect you with the right resources. We don’t always think about our own wellness as it relates to safety, but there is a clear connection.
Spring Break Safety Tips
Never leave a party with a stranger, and establish a meeting place in advance in case you get separated from your group. It’s always best to attend with a friend. If you do leave without your friends, share details about where you’re going and when they should expect you back.
Practice safe drinking habits. Consider taking turns so that one person in your group plans on minimal drinking each night to help look out for everyone. Other good habits include keeping an eye on your drink at all times and only accepting beverages that you have watched being made or poured.
Traveling Outside the Country
If you are traveling internationally:
- Bring a copy of your passport and keep it in a separate location in case the original is lost or stolen.
- Keep your passport and extra money locked in a safe in your hotel room when you are out during the day.
- Sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This free service provides security updates from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate while you are abroad.
- Share your travel itinerary with trusted friends or family and check in along the way.
- Know what to do in an emergency. Emergency numbers in other countries are not 9-1-1. Research the appropriate number ahead of time and program it into your phone. The U.S. Department of State maintains an updated list of emergency contacts by country.
Campus Survey
We appreciate the community’s honest feedback through the survey sent to all employees and students. We will send a few reminders before the deadline on March 6, 2026.
