The first full month of the semester is behind us. It is our sincere hope that first-year students are adjusting positively to Bucknell. We want to thank our colleagues in Student Affairs for creating an opportunity for us to meet and educate first-year students. We were able to offer them active shooter training and alcohol education in conjunction with Evangelical Hospital. The safety of our community is always at the forefront of our minds. We look forward to additional opportunities to educate and share needed information with the campus community. We will continue to engage our community in non-crisis moments. We ask for your continued feedback and sharing of any matters of concern so we can work together to keep our community safe.
I invite members of the community to meet with me and discuss any topics and issues of concern on Thur., Oct. 17, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the McDonnell Amphitheatre. We will have smores and a fire pit going for warmth. In the event of inclement weather, we will transition to the ELC. If I will discuss some Public Safety updates and answer any questions.
October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence awareness month was first introduced back in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic violence. It was created not only to bring more awareness to others but to connect and unify the millions of affected victims that had been battered due to domestic violence. There are number of resources available to victims of domestic violence at Bucknell. We will have some tabling events in the ELC the first week of October.
Traffic and Security
You may have seen workers in yellow vests or gray attire helping with traffic, parking and security at University events. Public Safety hires contracted employees (either University employees who normally work in other departments, or those provided by third-party services. This allows us to safely and efficiently manage crowds and guests while ensuring that our Public Safety officers can devote their full attention to law enforcement duties.
Clery Act
On Sept. 9, I sent the following message to the campus community:
Bucknell University prepares the Annual Security and Annual Safety Report (Annual Security Report) to comply with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act.
· The Annual Security Report includes statistics for the prior three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on-campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
· The Annual Fire Safety Report contains statistics related to fires that occurred in on-campus student housing facilities for the prior three years, descriptions of fire safety systems in on-campus student housing facilities, and policies and other information related to fires and fire prevention.
· The report includes crime statistics from University Police and other university offices and departments and local law enforcement agencies.
· No formal police report is required for a crime to be included in the statistics. Every effort is taken to ensure that everyone required to report does so and that statistics are as accurate and complete as possible. Information included in the annual report is reviewed for accuracy, completeness and readability.
· The University is required by law to send this report to all faculty, staff and students by Oct. 1 each year.
