We are approaching the holiday season, a time of year when scams and frauds increase. A recent email that went to many members of our community in regards to musical equipment is an example of these phishing scams. You may receive emails to your Bucknell  and personal accounts and/or texts that ask you to send money. Some scams will allege they have sensitive photos and that you need to send Bitcoin. We can’t encourage you enough to not engage and provide your banking information. Often these bad actors are outside of the U.S., making prosecution extremely difficult. We remind everyone in our community to be vigilant.

Never give your personal bank account, credit card number or other sensitive information over the phone or via email until you have verified who you are speaking with. If you have concerns about an email or phone call from a company, contact Public Safety or L&IT. Remember that law enforcement will never ask you for money over the phone. Here is a list of resources to be aware of:

• National Fraud Information Center. Fraud.org is a project of the National Consumers League. This organization reports fraudulent activity to the federal government and maintains detailed records of fraud incidents. It also provides links for assistance sources in your state.
• Internet Crime Complaint Center. The FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center run a site called the Internet Crime Complaint Center. It features many tips and other helpful information about avoiding email scams and what to do if you fall victim to one. It also offers a link for filing a claim against a third party who stole or attempted to steal your identity. 
• U.S. Department of Justice. The U.S. Department of Justice runs websites that allow you to file email-scam complaints. The site also features plenty of helpful links, tips and advice.
• Better Business Bureau. The BBB makes it possible to alert others to what happened to you so they don’t fall for the same scams.

We know students do not always lock their vehicle doors or room doors. We had a recent incident in which several hundred dollars were stolen from an unlocked vehicle. Taking the simple precaution of locking your doors can prevent crime. 

On Nov. 5, as a community we can engage in our democratic process and vote. Larison Dining Hall is a polling location. Unfortunately, the setup of Larison allows access from the polling location into the residence hall. I strongly encourage all students in Larison to lock their doors at all times but especially on election day, when the public will have access to this building.

Lewisburg Borough Leaf Collection

Please keep in the mind the following information shared by the Borough Manager:

Lewisburg Borough officially began its annual leaf collection this morning (Oct. 14, 2024).  Leaf collection will continue until Nov.22, 2024.  Beginning next Monday (Oct. 21, 2024) through the end of leaf collection on Nov. 22, 2024, the Buffalo Valley Regional Police Department will ticket and tow any vehicles in violation of the Borough’s No Parking restrictions related to street cleaning. Please consider reminding your students, staff and faculty of the ‘No Parking for Street Cleaning” restrictions and remind them that the streets will need to remain clear for the entire time from 7 a.m. to noon as the leaf vacuum truck and street sweeper may make multiple passes during this five-hour period.
