May 2022 Chief’s Blog

We want to congratulate the graduating Class of 2022! The resiliency and perseverance to continue your education during a global pandemic is remarkable. We know many of our students are feeling the stress and anxiety that comes with finals. We are hopeful everyone is prioritizing some time for self-care as the semester draws to a close.

We enjoyed participating in a number of proactive positive events during the month of April. One of our favorites events was Canoe Battleship. In the next few paragraphs I will provide an update on our current activities and initiatives. The photos below are highlights of some of the interactions from the month of April.

Update on Recent Activities

Update on Recent Activities

  • We held our final Public Safety open forum of the semester on April 4. Those unable to attend can view a recording here.
  • Buffalo Valley Regional Police Department Chief Paul Yost and Public Safety participated in an open forum on April 14 hosted by Bucknell Student Government. We discussed the dynamics of call response, living in Lewisburg and collaboration between our agencies, and answered general questions.
  • The first meeting of the newly formed Campus Police & Safety Committee was held on April 15. This new student advisory committee is a byproduct of student advocacy and shows how we can work together to address safety on our campus. We are working to complete the mission statement by the end of May. This fall, wee will reach out to students who may be interested in being a part of this inclusive committee.
  • We continue to seek opportunities for positive interactions with our community. I want to thank everyone who completed the online survey after being given a card by an officer. If you have an interaction with an officer and receive a card, please take a moment to complete it.

Update on Some of our Current Initiatives

  • Our new policy manual is on track to be completed by the end of May. We will post key policies to our webpage. If you have not been to our webpage in a while, we invite you to take a look at some of the changes. We have updated our bike registration process, added a FAQ section and updated staff information, and more is coming.
  • We are hiring! While the dedicated team members of Public Safety continue to provide 24/7 coverage, we are looking to fill vacancies to meet the diverse needs of our campus community. If you know someone who would be a great addition to Public Safety, please encourage them to apply — more information can be found here.
  • It is the time of the year where we are gathering data to complete the Annual Security Report. The Jeanne Clery Act requires colleges and universities to complete the ASR by Oct. 1. Over the next two months, we will work diligently with our campus partners to complete our report.
  • We will also work with campus partners to provide additional safety programming for our campus community  during the fall semester. We will update our webpage and use the Bucknell Message Center to share information about fall training opportunities offered by Public Safety.
  • We continue to work through the recommendations from the Margolis Healy Report.

General Updates

  • We know parking continues to be a concern for students, faculty, staff and parents. Please note that first-year students who have not received a parking pass through the Office of Accessibility Resources are not permitted to park on campus.
  • Intentionally taking the property of another with intent to deprive them of their property is not a prank, it is a crime. Public Safety is obligated to hold individuals accountable when crimes are committed. As the semester winds down, we are encouraging students to make good decisions.
  • When you see something, please call and say something. You can report situations anonymously by calling 570-577-3333. You can also email our department, but emails are not monitored 24/7, so please do not use email to share information about urgent matters.
