December 2022

As we enter the final month of the fall semester, we want to wish all of our students, faculty, and staff members a safe and peaceful holiday season. Our final blog of 2022 focuses on safety-related tips.

Running and Driving on Bucknell’s Campus

When running, you should always be aware of your surroundings and take precautions to protect yourself. It’s easy to become so focused on your run that you stop paying attention to what’s happening around you.

  • Face oncoming traffic.
  • Wear bright-colored clothing to improve your visibility.
  • Avoid jogging in secluded areas or at night. If you do run after dark, do so in well-lit and populated areas, and consider buying reflective running gear or a runner’s light so that you’re highly visible to traffic.
  • Jog in open spaces, away from bushes or alcoves where someone could hide.

We remind all drivers that the speed limit on most roads within the inner campus is 15 mph. Slow down and remain alert to walkers and joggers. Pedestrians have the right of way at marked areas around campus.

Vehicle Safety

For all students driving home for the winter break, please make sure you conduct a basic maintenance check of your vehicle. That includes making sure your vehicle has oil, your tire pressure indicator light is not on, and your battery is not dead. As you prepare to leave for break, don’t leave your vehicle parked overnight with your luggage and personal items in plain view. Don’t leave your vehicle unlocked.

Room Safety

Lock your doors and do not leave your key in the door lock. If you will be on campus over break, do not let anyone you do not know follow you into buildings avoid piggybacking as much as possible. When in doubt, call Public Safety. Burglary during breaks is a crime of opportunity, and we cannot overstate the importance of locking your doors.

Be Aware of Charity Scams

Many good-willed individuals express their generosity by giving to those less fortunate. As such, the holiday season presents extra opportunities for scam artists to take advantage of the kindness and compassion of others. When giving, remember to use your head as well as your heart. The Better Business Bureau offers additional information about what to avoid.

Students Staying on Campus During the Break

If you will be performing lab work or need access to other specific spaces over break, please be sure to make arrangements with the appropriate administrator before the break begins. That way, they can let us know who should have access to certain locations on campus. Please remember that Public Safety officers and our Communications Center provide 24/7 protection to the campus community if you need any assistance, we are a phone call away at 570-577-3333.
