February 2023

We are excited to welcome back Bucknellians for the spring 2023 semester. As a department, we are pleased to present our 2022 Department of Public Safety Annual Report (login required). This report differs in scope and content from the federally mandated Clery Annual Security Report. We hope you enjoy reading about the progress we have made as a department over the past year in service to our community.

Parking Update

This semester will present some additional parking challenges that we will all need to navigate with civility. The construction project at the Mods will last several more months, and beginning in May, Lot 73 (a staff lot near Christy Mathewson–Memorial Stadium) and Lot 72 (the largest visitor lot on campus, located directly in front of Lot 72) will come offline until spring 2024 due to construction of the Pascucci Family Athletics Complex.

Many of our campus partners bring visitors to campus for admissions events, tours, athletics events and other activities, and it is critical for our guests to have designated campus parking. We are mindful of the current parking compression and how taking more lots offline will affect students, employees and visitors. We are simply left with no easy choices and ask for your patience and cooperation. In the coming weeks we will work to designate a new parking area for visitors, many of whom are prospective students and their families. Please watch for information via email and the Message Center.

Community Engagement

As a reminder, we continue to offer a variety of training opportunities for students, staff and faculty. We have Public Safety team members who are trainers in the following areas — please contact publicsafety@bucknell.edu for more information:

  • Active Shooter
  • De-escalation
  • Situational Awareness and Workplace Violence Mitigation
  • AVADE Personal Self-defense

Our assistant director of community engagement is working with students to host another Narcan training session for the campus community. This event will take place on Wednesday, March 8, from 6 to 7 p.m. Additional details will be shared on the Message Center.

Beginning this month, there will be regular engagement opportunities aimed at strengthening the relationship between PSafe and the community we serve. We also encourage you to follow our Instagram page.

Timely Warnings

Finally, I want to discuss the Timely Warning Notification Process. In an emergency situation such as an act of violence, natural disaster or other unpredictable incident, we will activate the emergency alert system. Emergency alerts are reserved for critical incidents that pose an imminent and ongoing threat to the health and safety of the University community. We send alerts via our outdoor public address system, texts, cellular calls, email and social media. For events that may draw attention but pose no imminent danger or ongoing threat, a campus notification may be issued.

Scams

Please call Public Safety if you receive suspicious emails or texts demanding money. There are a number of sophisticated scams that are designed to get your personal information. Never provide your personal banking information, social security number, and other pertinent information via email or texts to an unknown third party. An old scam from a couple of years ago nationally has found its way to our campus. If you receive an email from an alleged Mexican cartel demanding money, do not respond, block the number it is a scam. There have been several articles about this scam for the last few years.
